Dear Friend,

The new year is upon us, and for millions of older adults, 2026 brings a fresh set of challenges. With recent cuts to programs such as SNAP and Medicaid, many are facing increased hardship. They’re depending on us more than ever to provide hope and comfort, safeguarding them against hunger and isolation.

Meals on Wheels San Francisco delivers not only nutritious meals, but also critical human connections that transform lives. These services offer lifelines to isolated seniors who can’t shop or cook, assist during health emergencies, and help older neighbors live independently for as long as possible.

Your gifts make all of this possible. You empower us to show up for older adults when it matters most, ensuring that no senior is left behind.

We hope the stories you’ll read in this issue of Friends at the Door inspire you to support our mission with a gift today. Your generosity truly changes lives, and we are profoundly grateful.

Warmest thanks for your kindness and continued support!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Steele

“They Don’t Just Bring Food”

At 86, Carmen takes life one step at a time, carefully holding the handrail in her San Francisco home. Her meal delivery driver, David, checks in with her every day.

“Every time I visit, seniors ask, ‘Are you going to be back? Will I get my meals?’” David says. “And Carmen always says, ‘I can’t thank you enough.’”

Carmen lives alone in the same apartment she’s called home for more than 40 years. Her eyesight isn’t what it used to be, so cooking safely has become difficult. The visits from Meals on Wheels bring her nourishment, connection, and peace of mind, knowing someone cares enough to show up.

“The meals are delicious, but it’s the people who make them that mean so much,” Carmen says. “They don’t just bring food; they bring friendship.”

Her gratitude extends to everyone who makes those meals possible, from the kitchen staff preparing food before dawn to the donors who make every delivery a reality. “I wish I could thank every person who gives,” Carmen says softly. “Because of you, I don’t have to worry about my next meal. I can just be thankful.”

For Carmen and thousands like her, that daily knock brings more than food: It brings comfort, safety, and hope. Thank you, <First Name>, for all you do to make that possible.

Volunteer Spotlight

A Morning of Service That Helped San Francisco Seniors Before Thanksgiving

Meals on Wheels San Francisco welcomed volunteers of all ages for a special pre-Thanksgiving service day at the MOWSF Kitchen.

Families, friends, and community partners came together to create handmade holiday cards, add cheerful stickers to more than 2,000 Thanksgiving meal boxes, and assemble special packages that accompanied holiday deliveries. The energy in the room reflected a shared belief that small gestures can make a meaningful difference for older adults who rely on these essential services.

Many volunteers continued their morning by delivering meals and visiting homebound clients. A warm conversation at the doorway, a quick check-in, and a simple smile reminded everyone that human connection is at the heart of Meals on Wheels. These moments offered as much comfort as the nourishing meals themselves.

Events like this demonstrate how community support strengthens our mission. When volunteers show up, supplies get prepared faster, meals are delivered with care, and seniors feel seen and valued. Thank you to all of our volunteers!

A Young Musician Uses Her Talent to Feed Homebound Seniors

Earlier this fall, we received a heartfelt note from Noella Tae, a talented young musician and senior at Convent High School who is also a Pre-College student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM). Noella had an idea: She wanted her senior recital to be more than a performance — she wanted it to make a difference.

Noella organized a solo benefit concert at SFCM and invited friends, family, and community members to support a cause close to her heart. Her hope was simple but powerful: to help ensure that homebound seniors in San Francisco receive the meals and care they depend on.

Noella’s music — and her compassion — resonated. Her recital raised a much-appreciated $1,035 for Meals on Wheels San Francisco.

At a time when more and more older neighbors are turning to us for support, acts of generosity like Noella’s remind us that compassion has no age boundaries. We are deeply grateful for her talent, her initiative, and her big heart.

A Blessing for Henry

Henry, 79, lives by himself in the quiet apartment that has been his home for decades. After his partner passed away a few years ago, Henry’s days started to feel longer and lonelier, especially during the winter months. Cooking for one became too much, and most evenings ended with something simple, or nothing at all.

That changed when Meals on Wheels San Francisco began delivering fresh, nutritious meals to his door. Each knock brought not only food, but also comfort and a reason to look forward to the day. “When I see the delivery coming, I feel like someone still remembers me,” Henry says. “That means a lot.”

“I’m eating better, but I’m also smiling more,” he adds. “The food is wonderful, but the kindness is what stays with you.” Henry often talks about how much he admires the volunteers and staff who make the deliveries possible, saying, “They give so much of themselves every single day.”

When his health allows, Henry likes to give back in his own way. He writes small notes of appreciation that he tucks inside the empty meal containers, knowing someone at the kitchen will see them. “It’s my way of saying thank you,” he says. “I may not have much, but I can still share kindness.”

For the volunteers, it’s clear that Henry’s appreciation goes both ways. They describe his warmth, his stories, and how he always asks how they’re doing. “It’s like we take care of each other,” one driver said. “Henry reminds us that what we do truly matters.”

Every meal that leaves the Meals on Wheels Kitchen carries that same spirit of gratitude — from seniors like Henry who receive them, to the community that makes them possible.

Your generosity turns ingredients into nourishment, deliveries into friendships, and gratitude into hope.
