Volunteer Services

Nourishing the Whole Person
People all across San Francisco volunteer their time with Meals On Wheels of San Francisco. We are lucky to live in a city that is home to so many wonderful people who care about their neighbors and their community.
Are you a MOWSF client who is interested in being matched one-on-one with a friendly neighbor to visit with on a regular basis – someone who you can play cards, take a walk, or chat with? Do you need a light bulb changed or a grab bar installed in your shower? Do you need toiletries, groceries, or other small household items, but you find it too hard to get to the store to pick up these items? We may be able to match you with a volunteer! See below for a list of volunteer services we can provide, then contact your MOWSF Social Worker to get started.
Friendly Visitors
We all need to share and laugh in order to stay healthy and happy. Some of our senior clients are matched with volunteers and often they become life-long friends. Your Friendly Visitor may come to your home to play cards, watch movies, engage in good conversation, read aloud, or find other activities based on your common interests.
Grocery Shoppers
Since our clients find it difficult to leave their homes on their own, you can be matched with a volunteer Grocery Shopper. You just give the volunteer your shopping list for groceries, toiletries, and other small household items. Your Grocery Shopper picks up the items and you reimburse him or her for the purchases. You may be surprised to find that you and your volunteer Grocery Shopper enjoy each other’s company, too!
Home Safety and Urgent Needs Program
You may have small household projects in your home – such as a dresser that needs repair, a light bulb that needs to be changed, a smoke alarm that needs to be installed, or a microwave that you need delivered. We may have a volunteer who can assist you with such projects!
Who are the MOWSF volunteers?
Our volunteers are people from all over the city. They are men and women, young and old, from diverse backgrounds and cultures. They are your neighbors! MOWSF volunteers go through a screening process that includes background and reference checks. Our volunteers are trained by our staff and receive on-going support and monitoring from MOWSF. For some projects we partner with the non-profit organization Rebuilding Together San Francisco, who screen and train their own volunteers.
How do I find out if I’m eligible for MOWSF volunteer services?
You, a family member, or a caregiver can learn more about our volunteer services, find out about eligibility, or make a request by talking with your MOWSF social worker. Please give us a call at 415-920-1111.
