How Meals Are Made for
Senior Across San Francisco
Long before the day’s deliveries begin, Richard Crocker is already thinking about the thousands of seniors whom Meals on Wheels San Francisco serves.
As executive chef and director of kitchen operations, Richard oversees the preparation of up to 10,000 meals each day. They’re portioned, packaged, and made ready to travel across the city to seniors who are counting on them.
To Richard, every detail matters. That’s why he gathers feedback from staff, drivers, social workers, and seniors themselves, who often share favorite recipes and meal ideas. “We want to make sure that we are making food that is familiar and accessible,” Richard says.
Quality ingredients matter just as much as the recipes themselves. Thanks to your generous support, high-quality ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible, including produce from across California and grass-fed beef from Marin County. And because many seniors eat smaller portions, the kitchen team is intentional about making every meal nutrient-dense and nourishing.
But Richard will tell you that the meal is only part of the service.
He can’t stress enough the importance of human connection for seniors at a vulnerable stage of life. “We may be the only point of contact that person sees for the day, week, or even month,” he says.
The knock at the door, the familiar face, the moment of connection — these matter just as much as what’s inside the packaged meal.
Your generosity ensures that our older neighbors feel valued. You are the reason why 5,000 local seniors receive nourishing meals and compassionate visits each day.
