A World of Difference

July 2018

From her hometown on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia to the parking lot at #MealsOnWheels, our volunteer Nicole brings a world of enthusiasm and energy to our #HomeDeliveredGrocery program.

Today, we caught up with Nicole as she placed the last of 40 bags of groceries in her small hatchback car with surgical precision – no doubt a skill she learned while working for the biotech firm Genentech. Within minutes of our brief conversation, she hit the road (all before 8:30am) to deliver groceries across San Francisco.

For Nicole, like many of our volunteers, it’s the people that keep her coming back each week. In describing the feeling she gets when she visits low-income seniors, she said, “It’s not just the words, but the look on their faces. They’re so grateful. You can tell I might be the only person they see all day.”

Nicole found out about Meals on Wheels when she spotted one of the fabulous #LetsDoLunch billboards around the Bay Area. We are extraordinarily grateful to the Ad Council and Meals on Wheels America for their generous donation of ad space around the country. If you’d like to join us to deliver a meal in San Francisco or any one of 5,000 Meals on Wheels locations across the country, visit AmericaLetsDoLunch.org to find the program nearest you.

Thank you to Nicole, the Ad Council, Meals on Wheels America, and all of our wonderful #volunteers. We couldn’t do this work without you!

In 2019 when I first met Maxine, her positive outlook on the difficulties many older adults face as they age inspired me. “Aging, to me, is really a state of mind," she told me back then. "As we age, we start to have issues with our bodies, but everything is about how...

As part of an ongoing series– How Are They Doing Today – we’re launching this year, I wanted to follow up with some of the Meals on Wheels seniors who have graciously shared their stories with me over the years. While everyone I’ve talked to comes from different walks...
