Justine and the Ip FamilyAround lunchtime on Thanksgiving Day, MOWSF volunteer David Ip and his two children, Wesley and Karina (ages 11 and 12), knocked on San Francisco senior Justine’s door. Justine, who lives by herself in the Tenderloin, began receiving meals from MOWSF two years ago. “It became really difficult to prepare meals,” she said. “Meals On Wheels has been a great help.”

Justine, who uses a wheelchair to get around her cozy one-bedroom apartment, was spending the day with her caretaker, Antonio. Along with two Thanksgiving dinners, the Ip Family delivered a gift bag for each of them containing a houseplant, volunteer decorated-placemat and turkey-shaped chocolates.

David, who drives for Lyft, became involved with MOWSF through a work volunteer event this summer. Since then, he has become an active volunteer. “We belong to a Buddhist temple,” said David, who lives in Mountain View. “They always encourage us to give back to society.” He also regularly participates in clean-up events at a local park.

Thanksgiving 2014-152In all, nearly 600 volunteers participated in MOWSF’s annual Thanksgiving Day Meal Delivery. They delivered 1,700 hot meals and pumpkin pies to seniors across San Francisco. Volunteers were also critical in helping behind the scenes. They assembled gift bags, directed traffic and organized meals by delivery route.

“We couldn’t have pulled this off without the tremendous support of our community — a community that truly cares and that understands how much impact this special day of service can have on their elderly neighbors,” said Danie Belfield, Director of Volunteers.

But it’s the post-Thanksgiving thank-you notes and calls from seniors that best sum up the success of the event:

Thanksgiving2014-Julia-600pxDear Meals On Wheels Management, Staff and Volunteers,

Thank you so much for all the time, effort and enthusiasm to make this Thanksgiving festive and fun. The meals were well prepared and nutritious. Most of all, I wish to thank the beautiful family – mother, father, two young sons – who came to my home with bright faces, smiles, and handmade art. Please let them know.

With gratitude,

Julia

I have the picture on my wall. It is wonderful.
