Reauthorize the Older Americans ActOn Wednesday, January 28, the Senate health committee unanimously approved the Older Americans Act (OAA) Reauthorization Act of 2015.

The (OAA), which was due for reauthorization in 2011, provides grants to states for senior social and nutrition services, including Meals on Wheels organizations and senior centers. It also supports programs that help prevent elder abuse.

U.S. Senate health committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) said the legislation would improve the lives of millions of seniors throughout the country by enabling Meals On Wheels, ensuring quality care in nursing homes and providing resources to help older Americans age comfortably in their homes.

Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-Wash.) said the Senate should pass the reauthorization quickly. “From putting in place stronger elder abuse protections to ensuring funding for Meals on Wheels, the Older Americans Act makes critical improvements to programs that are lifelines for seniors in Washington state and across the country.”
