San Francisco Seniors Remember – a collaborative oral history project between Meals On Wheels of San Francisco (MOWSF), the University of San Francisco (USF) and StoryCorps – took place from September through December 2014. Students enrolled in a USF oral history class, taught by Professor Ryan Van Meter, were paired with MOWSF seniors so their stories could be recorded and, with their permission, shared.
The students – all English majors – learned about oral history techniques in class and also participated in a StoryCorps training. After a few initial meetings, they interviewed their senior with a fellow classmate operating the microphone and tape recorder.
Over the course of the semester, students also engaged in a number of volunteer activities for MOWSF. They delivered disaster preparedness kits, prepared Thanksgiving pumpkin pies and tidied homes. They also performed a special task for the senior they interviewed, such as organizing photos in an album or giving an email tutorial. The interviews will be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
You can view pictures and listen to excerpts from the interviews on our website at www.mowsf.org/sfseniorsremember.
