$2,500 GRANT SUPPORTS SAN FRANCISCO SENIORS AND THEIR PET COMPANIONS
San Francisco, May 19, 2013 – Meals On Wheels of San Francisco (MOWSF) and Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) are pleased to announce the receipt of a grant from Banfield Charitable Trust to help feed the pets of needy seniors. This grant will provide 39 cats with a three-month supply of food, and PAWS will provide much needed additional pet-support services.
PAWS has been serving the San Francisco community for over 25 years. Today the organization provides support for more than 800 low-income clients and their 1,000 animal companions, providing food, litter, “Ask the Vet” support, flea and tick treatment, delivery of pet food and case management. The PAWS mission is to preserve, support and nurture the human-animal bond for those most vulnerable in our community. “No one should have to choose between caring for themselves and caring for their pets,” says Kevin Kosik, President/CEO of PAWS.
MOWSF provides home-delivered meals, social work, volunteer support and safety assistance for more than 3,000 homebound seniors in San Francisco, helping them age safely in their own homes.
For five years MOWSF and PAWS have partnered to serve isolated, homebound SF seniors. Together the organizations share dozens of common clients. The goal of this grant is to support needy, isolated seniors in providing for and cherishing their pet companions. “For seniors this bond with pets can be so important to successful aging at home,” says Ashley McCumber, Executive Director of MOWSF. “We are most appreciative of the Banfield grant and pleased as always to partner with PAWS. Together we can help low income seniors and their pets in aging at home safely, with dignity.”
Banfield Charitable Trust funds or administers programs to keep pets and people together. It is the largest funder of veterinary care assistance, giving in 2012 nearly $750,000 in vet care assistance to those struggling to care for their pets.
