Meals On Wheels of San Francisco’s 27th Annual Star Chefs & Vintners Gala breaks records with $2.6 million raised for homebound seniors

Meals On Wheels of San Francisco’s 27th Annual Star Chefs & Vintners Gala breaks records with $2.6 million raised for homebound seniors

SAN FRANCISCO (June 4, 2014) – With the help of Northern California’s illustrious superstars of food and wine, Meals On Wheels of San Francisco raised a record-breaking $2.6 million at the 27th Annual Star Chefs & Vintners Gala, which took place Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. The final tally was the most money raised in the 27-year history of the Gala and is enough money to provide more than 565,000 meals to homebound seniors.

“The funds raised at this year’s Star Chef s & Vintners Gala exceeded last year’s total by nearly $450,000,” said Ashley C. McCumber, Executive Director of Meals On Wheels of San Francisco. “Through the generous support of the world-class chefs and wineries, our corporate sponsors and individual donors, Meals On Wheels of San Francisco is able to continue aid for the growing needs of seniors in our community.”

The live auction featured several one-of-a-kind items including an exclusive dinner party by James Beard award-winning Chef Nancy Oakes at the eclectically stylish loft of superstar designer and impresario Ken Fulk, which sold for $52,000. Additionally, an auction lot for a dinner experience with Chef Staffan Terje of long-time San Francisco favorite Perbacco and Chef Stuart Brioza of James Beard award-winning State Bird Provisions in which they will collaborate on a five-course feast for eight guests was sold three times for $44,000 each.

The climax of the evening was Fund-A-Route, in which guests pledged an astounding $810,000 towards funding meal delivery routes in San Francisco during the next year. The live auction and Fund-A-Route both brought in record-breaking numbers.

More than 1,000 guests attended this year’s Gala, dining on the culinary creations of more than 100 of Northern California’s top chefs including Gala Chef Chairwoman Nancy Oakes (Boulevard), Stuart Brioza and Nicole Kransinski (State Bird Provisions), Mark Dommen (One Market), Mourad Lahlou (Aziza), Thomas McNaughton (Central Kitchen), Charles Phan (Hard Water), Yigit Pura (Tout Sweet Patisserie), Evan and Sarah Rich (Rich Table), Mark Sullivan (Spruce), Staffan Terje (Perbacco), Tony Wu (M.Y. China) and more! The mouth-watering food was accompanied by wines from more than 90 of California’s premier vintners including Cakebread Cellars, Cliff Lede Vineyards, Duckhorn Portfolio, Hanzell Vineyards, Kamen Estate Wine, Kenzo Estate, Lambert Bridge, Mt. Brave, Pride Mountain Vineyards, Quintessa, Radio-Coteau, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Silver Oak Cellars and Twomey Cellars. Additionally, the reception included specialty cocktails created by celebrity bartenders Ronnie New of Comstock Saloon and Trick Dog’s Chester Watson and Morgan Schick.
