Together, we March For Meals so San Francisco seniors are not forgotten!
Meals On Wheels of San Francisco is proud to kickoff off March for Meals, a month long campaign to raise awareness and critical resources for the plight of homebound seniors. We are doing this in partnership with Meals On Wheels America and over 250 local programs across the country.
March for Meals recognizes the historic achievement of the Older Americans Act, amended and signed by President Richard Nixon on March 22,1972. Throughout the month, we are featuring an exciting line-up of city leaders, chefs, CEOs, athletes, and entertainers who have pledged to deliver meals to homebound seniors.
In kicking off this campaign, Ellie Hollander, President and CEO of Meals On Wheels America, said, “The Meals on Wheels ‘more than just a meal’ model addresses three of the biggest threats of aging: isolation, hunger and loss of independence. More than ever, we must join forces to meet the needs of the fastest growing population in America who want to be able to live at home for as long as they can. It not only makes economic sense to enable seniors to stay healthy and safe at home, but it improves the health and vibrancy of our communities and our nation at large.”

The startling reality behind this campaign:
- The population of homebound seniors in San Francisco is growing exponentially. In the past decade, Meals On Wheels of San Francisco has tripled the number of meals we deliver, from 650,000 in 2007 to 1.6 million in 2016.
- Homebound seniors on fixed incomes are falling below poverty levels in overwhelming numbers as the cost of living rises. 78% of Meals On Wheels seniors fall below the federal poverty line and 56% of seniors in San Francisco do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs (based on data from the California Elder Economic Security Index).
- More and more, seniors are living alone. 66% of all Meals On Wheels seniors live alone, without the help of family or friends.
