- Meals On Wheels of San Francisco was established in 1970
- We purchased our building in 1995 in the Bayview neighborhood of San Francisco. It houses our offices and kitchen.
Our Services
- Home Delivered Meals - 2 meals per day city wide seven days a week – We offer low sodium, diabetic, and mechanically softened meals to seniors with special dietary needs.
- Dorrwin B. Jones Senior Center is our Congregate Meal Site at Trinity Episcopal Church at 1668 Bush Street, San Francisco. We serve a hot meal to an average of 150 seniors each weekday
- We provide 1,010 hours of Nutrition Counseling each year
- We provide Social Work assessment and referrals for all clients
- We provide intensive Case Management to over 200 clients per year
- More than 400 Volunteers support our program by grocery shopping for clients, providing friendly visits, running errands for seniors and assisting with special events
- Our PetPal Program currently serves 71 seniors with pets, providing food and supplies donated by PETCO
- The Home Safety Program provides grab bars, railings, smoke detectors, and other items to improve safety in the home
- Emergency Client Needs Program provides items such as microwaves, bath mats, shower chairs, bath mats, medicine organizers and bed linens
Our Clients
- We currently serve over 1,400 homebound seniors
- 62% live alone
- 63% are on modified diets – low sodium, diabetic, or mechanically softened
- Income — Over 60% or our clients are considered low income and live on fixed incomes.
Our Meals
- We serve 15,900 home-delivered meals per week
- Last fiscal year 2006-2007, we served 723,391 meals to 2,000 unduplicated clients
The Budget
- Approximately $5.6 million operating budget
- ½ of our budget is funded by City of San Francisco contracts
- ½ of our budget is raised from individuals, corporations, and foundations
- 82% of MOW income dollars goes directly to meal delivery & services for clients
- The cost of providing meals for one senior per year is $3,650 - approximately the cost of a one day stay in the hospital
